2020 feiern die Vereinigten Staaten, England und die Niederlande "400 Jahre Mayflower". Die calvinistischen Pilger, die 1620 in Plymouth Rock in Nordamerika, dem heutigen Massachusetts, eintrafen und dort die Plymouth Colony gründeten, verbrachten die Jahre von 1609 bis 1620 in der niederländischen Stadt Leiden im Exil, um der religiösen Verfolgung in England zu entgehen. Von dort aus setzten sie 1620 mit der "Speedwell" nach Southhampton über, um dann an Bord der berühmten Mayflower zu gehen.
Was hat das mit Thanksgiving zu tun? Nun: diese Siedler feierten ihr erstes Erntedankfest in der neuen Kolonie gemeinsam mit den nativen Indianern, die ihnen beibrachten, das Land in ihrer neuen Heimat zu bestellen.
In 2020 the United States, England and the Netherlands are commemorating that 400 years ago a group of English religious refugees, after twelve years of voluntary exile in Leiden, left for North America where they founded Plymouth Colony. There’s going to be many festivities with regard to freedom, tolerance and the Pilgrims. Although not the first or most successful settlers, these English-speaking Protestants have gone down in history under the name Pilgrims as founders of America.
For those who don’t know much about Thanksgiving, here’s the basic story: There, in their new home, they celebrated their first corn harvest by sharing a feast with the friendly Native American tribe who taught them how to farm the land.
